Well, here we go again with talk of a county split. South County has the population and tourism to support the ability to be a county of its own. North County, with a lower population density and much less tourism, would have difficulty standing on its own. Its needs are much more agricultural, and there is no desire for urbanization. It more closely resembles San Luis Obispo County, and if a county split ever did actually materialize, North County should merge with SLO County.

What would be in it for SLO?

I'm not sure if I agree with the author. Go up to Solvang any afternoon and there has been a HUGE increase in tourists just in the last 5 years.

North County merger with SLO County makes the most sense of all, if North County wants more control over its own destiny.

South County has no interests in holding on to North County, so the only issue is whether this makes sense to SLO County and then start the paperwork.

South SB County is relatively too urban and edgy to be married permanently to North County's more solid agricultural and wide open space values. It would also be better for South County to go its own way without the friction or distraction trying to balance two such disparate interests.

I have long supported the split way back when and all my environmental friends were opposed. I am only slightly less supportive now. The devil, however is in the details; exactly where the split line is placed. At any event it ain't gonna happen so don't waste to much time arguing about it.

The split can easily happen and lines were already drawn in the last election. Drawing the lines was not the controversy; only the fiscal underpinnings and a sense of distorted tradition to keep the county intact.

We have someone named EAST beach commenting on a NORTH/SOUTH split.

Where is the west of the quartet?/
