WWII Aircraft Part of Veterans Day Celebration

Santa Barbarans can view 15 vintage World War II airplanes fly over several locations this weekend as part of a slate of festivities, sponsored by the Pierre Claeyssens Veterans Museum, in honor of Veterans Day.

At 7:15 on Saturday morning, the planes will pass over the Page Youth Center to mark the start of the Veterans Day Marathon. At 9:30 a.m., the aircraft will fly by Leadbetter Beach as runners near the race’s finish line. On Sunday, at12:45 p.m., the planes will overfly the Veterans Day Parade — which goes from State and Sola streets down to Cabrillo Boulevard — in a classic military formation.

Those who wish to watch the planes take off and land at the Santa Barbara Airport can head over to the airport’s World War II Memorial at 500 James Fowler Road, near the entrance to the long-term parking lot. That memorial honors the aviators who died in the war and those who served at the area Marine Corps station at the time. Another memorial at the airport — the Corsair Memorial, marked by a propeller — can be found on the north side of the property at 601 Norman Firestone Road, near the administration facility.
