Citizens Sought as Commissioners for Public Engagement

The City of Goleta is looking for seven citizens to serve on the Public Engagement Commission, the first action to emerge from its decision in May to hold district elections for City Council in the future. Commissioners will be looking at five elemental questions: Should Goleta become a charter city? Should city councilmembers receive more than the current $7,020 per year, and how much more? Should council meetings happen after 5 p.m.? Should the mayor’s term be four years, not two? How does Goleta increase the number of residents who participate in government?

Drawing the new district boundaries will also involve a committee, one of whose members will come from the Public Engagement Committee. To qualify, persons must be Goleta residents and not already part of the City of Goleta staff or officials. Six regularly scheduled meetings occur per year, and commissioners are compensated $50 per meeting. Applications for a seat on the Public Engagement Commission are due by July 31.
