Nitz, get over it. The whole backcounty is a mess and you're whining over a couple miles of old road that got overgrown to the point it was just a trail when the Forest Service closed the road. I last drove down that stretch in the mid-70's. My only hope is that they can keep the downhill crazies off the new road so normal folk can enjoy the access.

I'm with you, Ray. Can't stop thinking about the homeless animals, let alone those that haven't survived.
I'm looking forward to the re-birth, but very sad that all my favorite places are essentially gone. I try to look on the bright side, but I'm having trouble finding one. It will be interesting to see the rock formations, as we can now do in Gaviota Pass, but that's small compensation for a denuded landscape. The best spin I can put on this fire is that ticks won't be a problem for awhile.

Great photos. Scary, but great. More people need to see these to realize the fury of this fire and why it's so hard to control. Thanks for keeping us informed, Ray.

I'd like to think the fire fighters know what's best, but after watching the fire expand from the narrow front on the Mission Pine ridge into what we have today, I'm not sure. I'd sure hate to be an animal in that forest.

Great story, Ray, and photos, too. It's like a big mystery unfolding before our eyes--will the Sisquoc survive? I'd be interested in knowing how much mosaic of live forest is left after reading about "islands of unburned fuel" continually going up in smoke. Is there anything left in the main burn area?
