UCSB is an evil empire and there is not much we locals can do about it. I would, however, urge all readers to oppose in every way they can at every chance they get every single thing that UCSB tries to do. If we can't beat it perhaps we can slow down its destruction of the local community.

Wow, I'm waiting for so called "realitycheck" to somehow blame Obama. At any event I drive by there a lot and have never had to wait anywhere near 20 minutes. I don't know why it is taking so long and I doubt there is a really good reason but it is hardly the catastrophe you make it out to be IMHO.

Terribly tragic and stupid at the same time. I am not judging this youngster too harshly, there but for the grace of god... I did some incredibly stupid things in my youth and thankfully survived.

Mountain out of a molehill. Tempest in a teapot. Call if what you will but the effect will likely not be as dramatic as expected. First off there is no requirement that if you run for city council to represent any given district you must be a member of whatever the presumed dominant ethnicity of that district is. Second, even if there is such "ethnic purity" once on the general council things could turn out like at the Board of Supervisors n which the three South County folks tend to vote as a block and the 2 North County supes as a block. Only at every election when the crucial 3rd district changes hands do things get shaken up. Santa Barbara city politics will still be a bit of a quagmire of opposing interests.

I have a great idea. Let's build a few dozen or more huge mansions out on the Gaviota coast. Those millionaires will be happy to buy what little is left of our water since they are so rich a few $K in water bills won't bother them at all. As an added advantage we won't have to see all those beautiful vistas they'll be destroying and blocking our view of.

You get what you pay for. The supes do a lot of hard work and if you want quality supes you have to pay a fair salary. $94K is not outrageous for busy hard working executives.

I agree that some sort of compromise may end up being necessary. I wonder, however, what you mean when you use the term "Let's find a solution..". Are you part of the solution? To convince the developer that his dream of fantastic profits may need to be modified will take a heck of a lot of work and money for legal and other fees. What are you doing to help save this fabulous place, Talk is cheap and I urge you and others to get involved, contribute time and money and your obvious passion to save this place and "we" may yet do it. This is not meant to insult you or denigrate your comments which are good ones but merely to remind everyone that "we" cannot win this battle with comments on the Independent's board it will take hard work and patience. Join us in this battle. Only if the entire community gets fired up can we save Naples forever. BTW, if you are already a volunteer my apologies and my gratitude in advance.

Great idea but Bajades makes a good point. Downtown is flat enough that multi gears are not necessary but medium weight hybrids with a basket, a lock and 5 gears on a single front chain ring would be sweet. Heck I might even leave Noleta from time to time and go to "the City".

Standard Portfolios Asset Management has deep pockets and Liu will be a serious force to contend with for those committed to preserving the Gaviota Coast. Any of you reading this article and these postings who are opposed to the rape and pillage of one of the most spectacular places on Earth should get in touch with the Naples Coalition and send money and volunteer to help. Otherwise the coast is toast!

Crappy ads for sure but Mitchum is a twit and a whiner and we are very lucky he didn't win. I sort of feel sorry for him really. He has trouble finding a job at this point? All because of some harsh ads? That is a bit hard to believe.
