STOP PAVING MY LAND! Farm it (or leave it forever) - create an interactive, sustainable farm. Open it to the community for events, food purchase, enjoyment...DO NOT CHANGE THE ZONING, and don't let that LA-type special interest fool or bully you into it! There should be a law against those big $ special interests being able to sue the publicly funded city council - it is bullying; Let them be heard through the venue and process any other public member does.

Thank You, Paul, for stating so well, what I have been thinking. As a former GATE teacher, I completely agree. To add to this, I found our current GATE system actually was a disservice to some GATE students. I felt that GATE should be for all gifted children, not just those who were high scoring. I had a bright young student, who wasn't motivated by grades, and was kicked out of his GATE classes. I felt he was one of my students MOST in need of what a GATE class should be - a nurturing place for special students; not a class for high achievers.Furthermore, our districts GATE structure with single-subject GATE classes is not one I have seen in any other district I have taught (4 districts, 2 states). I believe because it is very inefficient and creates huge inequalities.I fully support the secondary districts efforts to scrap this GATE program. We have other programs and levels of coursework that create sufficient challenges for students, such as IB, honors, and subject specific academies. Hopefully we will see an expansion in these programs with this restructuring.

our cars might be twins... my odyssey has multiply scratches, a huge dent in the bumper (i was really mad at myself for that stupid move) and a crack that has grown the width of the windshield; I just can't bring myself to get them repaired, because I really don't care. The car is working perfectly, and I have other things to spend my money on... like a subscription to edhat or something. happy driving and shuttling of children.

i know first hand that no schools have 6 admin. and even those listing 4 is not accurate count of FTE. Some are part-time (and they don't indicate that on anything) or not even really admin - they say it on the website, but they are actually teachers, earning teachers pay (pretty much) but getting admin. experience. cheap labor for the district...and Georgy is sooo right. the cost of medical insurance is strangling schools, (and probably others) which is indirectly affecting community, unemployment rates, children - our quality of life. Our med. insurance system needs serious reform... like that is going to happen anytime soon in this economic climate of everyone trying to just get what they can to maintain.

What drag racing? r we talking about the end of Calle Real where it meets Los Carneros? If so, you r totally off with a shopping center and an apt complex - there are none... Perhaps appleoneusmonk is actually with the developers? this seems to be their tactics...and btw- Goleta may not be the Gaviota coast, but it is beautiful and those of us who live here want to see smart, attractive developement that increases the areas value for years to come.

i don't think all these nay-sayers really represent the general public here... if you ask someone if it would be fun to have an ice skating rink, i think they would say yes. and if it isn't fun for you, why begrudge others - it's not about you. we are not funding this with all the tax dollars that are in low supply here. and with the extreme budget cuts in our schools, we could really use more extracurricular activities for our kids. i think there is a tendency for the active readers/commenters to be 'critics' and that is what we are seeing here. really, if ya don't care to ice-skate, then great, it doesn't need to be your concern. let the marketplace decide.

i think the problem is with the gangs, as a group, more than the individual who 'really' did it. Cervantes was a student of mine, an extreme 'follower,' the most extreme i have ever seen. But i had never seen him act mean or aggressive, rather he was nice and friendly with his teachers. Admittedly kids change, grow, become involved with the wrong group... it is a real tragedy when you see a nice kid go bad... but it is my guess that Cervantes was NOT the instigator, at best a follower and maybe a pawn.

Republicans and others are calling discussions of Palin's family and pregnant daughter "out of bounds," and as Starshine suggests, I don't care about them anyway. BUT it is the Republicans who want not only to discuss what my family does in private, they want to LEGISLATE IT! They want to decide if I can lay beside a male or female - AMEND THE CONSTITUTION 4 GOD'S SAKE, or what I can do with my body, or my baby. I say they have brought these discussions apon themselves - they've brought it to the World - and we should all be discussing them and how they have played out in the private household of a wanna-be VP! BUT the real question is: Is Palin really ready to be President of the Untided States!??!
