It’s even hot in the shade in Santa Barbara today, and it will just get hotter over the rest of the week, the National Weather Service (NWS) portends. Currently, an extreme heat advisory for most of Santa Barbara County warns of heat exhaustion and a Red Flag Warning for critical fire weather conditions.
Tuesday through Thursday, daytime temperatures are forecast to rise into the 90s in coastal and 100s for inland areas. Along the coast, the heat will remain in the 70s overnight as the warm waters offshore are keeping the air warmer, which in turn draws in more moisture. This resulting humidity just adds to the feeling of sweaty heat, explained Carol Ciliberti, a meteorologist with the NWS in Oxnard.
Conversely, the Sundowners expected later in the week will bring drier air, as winds blow from the north over the Santa Ynez range, developing heat as they rush down from the ridges — especially for Gaviota, Refugio, and San Marcos passes. Maximum temperatures could reach into the low 100s during sundowners, which could persist through Saturday.
The strong drying winds heighten the risk of fire, the National Weather Service warned. With area fire chiefs, the NWS issued a Red Flag Warning for the county’s mountains, foothills, and the Cuyama Valley. Avoid using equipment that emits sparks and remain aware of your surroundings, as a wind-driven fire can move quickly, they advised.
Staying in air-conditioned rooms — not always plentiful in a beach town — and avoiding the sun were recommended to avoid heat ailments. These can range from dizziness and heavy sweating to hot skin and no sweat in the case of heat stroke. The best way to avoid heat illnesses is to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, and to limit outdoor activity when the sun is at its peak in the afternoon. Do not leave pets or children in a vehicle.
The City of Goleta will open City Hall from noon to 6 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, so that people can get out of the heat. Bring a reusable water bottle, the city asked, and please do not bring pets. The council chambers are at 130 Cremona Drive, at the back of the building by the parking lot.
