The Spirit of Mother’s Day

Thu May 11, 2006 | 12:00pm

Forget tea and cookies. MotherHearts is throwing a different
kind of Mother’s Day event, one that celebrates the original intent
of the holiday. In 1870, with the memory of the bloody Civil War
still fresh in the minds of Americans, Julia Ward Howe (author of
“Battle Hymn of the Republic”) called for women to gather together
and bring an end to war. This Sunday, MotherHearts will honor
Howe’s intent with its Return to Mother’s Day event. The
celebration will feature music, art, poetry, and speakers. Check it
out Sunday, May 14, 1 p.m., at the Arlington West Memorial next to
Stearns Wharf. Visit www.motherhearts.org.
