Young and Restless

In a bold demonstration against inhumane
imprisonment
, several Laguna Blanca upper school students
gagged themselves and locked themselves in small cages at the
prestigious private school on February 12. As part of their Crimes
Against Humanity seminar, the students assumed the identities of
real-life political prisoners being held in various facilities
worldwide. Looking to stimulate dialogue on the controversial
subject while calling attention to the inhumane practices going on
at the global, national, and local levels, the teens took to the
cages twice on Monday for about an hour at a time, causing more
than a few dropped jaws among faculty and students alike.

Battling its way out of a competitive field of 16 local high
schools, the San Marcos High Academic Decathlon
Team
emerged victorious on February 10 in a regional
competition in Oxnard, propelling team members to a statewide
competition next month. Working with this year’s China theme, the
students competed in the areas of art, language and literature,
economics, music, math, social sciences, public speaking, essays,
personal interviews, and the ever-difficult Super Quiz. The Royals
will represent Santa Barbara County in Los Angeles in mid
March.
