Residents Speak Out Against Drilling Proposal

A meeting about Venoco’s slant drilling proposal drew nearly 130 people to Carpinteria City Hall on 7/30. Most speakers said the project’s draft environmental impact report needed to better address the noise the new oil operation would make and the effect it would have on Carpinteria’s baby seal rookery. Others expressed skepticism about the money the report said the new plant would generate for the city – an estimated $40 to $100 million over a 14-year period. Carpinteria planners are expected to release their final report in winter.
