Funding for the Williamson Act was saved again this week when Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger opted to retain state support of the program’s subvention grants, which offset counties’ lost tax revenues. The Williamson Act gives tax breaks to property owners who forgo development rights on agricultural land, but prevents counties from receiving millions of dollars annually in property taxes. Last year, Santa Barbara County had protected under the act and received some cash in subvention payback.
