The holiday season is a time of goodwill, charity, and peace. This year, let your holiday spending be a statement of compassion toward all creatures who share the planet. Here are some animal friendly gift giving ideas:
Don’t Give Animals as Gifts
Animals given as gifts are often unwanted after the holiday season has ended. Instead of giving a live animal as a gift, place a stuffed animal in a box filled with needed pet supplies-food, leashes, toys, etc. Then you can suggest a trip to your local humane society to adopt a pet if your recipient is ready. By doing this, you will also ensure that the recipient of your thoughtful gift bonds with the pet before they make a lifelong commitment.
Buy Materials to Humanely Educate Your Children
Consider books or videos about your child’s favorite animal. Here are some suggestions:
Charlotte’s Web, by E. B. White and Garth Williams
Buddy Unchained, by Daisy Bix
Lucky Boy, by Susan Boase
Because of Winn-Dixie, by Kate DiCamillo
“Let’s Get a Pup!” Said Kate, by Bob Graham
Adopt an Endangered Animal
The non-profit Defenders of Wildlife has 25 endangered animals you can choose from to adopt, anything from a fox to a dolphin. You can show you care by supporting an organization that protects endangered animals and their habitats. For only $25 you get an 8″ tall plush animal, a personalized certificate of adoption, a 5” by 7” photo and a fact sheet. Plus you are helping to protect that particular animal in need.
4. Give Cruelty-Free
Give a cruelty-free gift basket filled with products that have not been tested on animals and do not contain any fur products. Your special someone will know that you care enough to give a gift that saves the lives of rabbits, foxes, minks, and so many other beautiful furry animals. Most people are unaware that UGG boots are really sheep skin and are considered fur. You can get a non-sheep skin UGG for a third of the price online.
