Musings of a Single, Young (un)Professional
It’s early January, and a whole new year stretches before us, free of responsibilities or error. In a foolish New Year’s tradition, I’m making a list of well-intentioned promises to myself that I know I can’t keep. I’ll admit that for the last couple of years, while scheming a list of resolutions ranging from the serious (no more signing up for credit cards just to get a free sandwich) to the ridiculous (start eating vegetables and find a cure for drunk dialing), on that list is always “Date a decent boyfriend,” because like most young professionals out there, I’ve been conditioned to think my life is incomplete unless I’m sharing it with someone else. But this year I have resolved this: Being single kicks ass, and my resolution is to tell you alllll about it.
In this semi-regular column (in my amazing and whirlwind single life I am too spontaneous and free for weekly deadlines), I hope to relate all the magic that Santa Barbara has to offer us
-we who stand proud and alone, but not lonely. I intend to traverse every cliched anywhere in S.B. where one might encounter other splendid singles, like happy hours, bookstores, parks, art gallery openings, beaches, and community celebrations. I’ll even sample the murky waters of blind dates and online and speed dating, because we have a beautiful backyard and a diverse nightlife filled with some of the hottest people on the planet just waiting to meet us.
Feel free to live vicariously through or right along with me, emailing suggestions of hangouts or activities where I might meet other happily unattached people. And look for more articles tackling issues that we sweet singles bravely cope with, like choosing our daily happy-hour destination, sober and fun activities for when we’re on antibiotics, tips on who makes the best Bloody Mary for that “last night’s blind date was a NIGHTMARE!” hangover cure, and recreational classes, activities, and sports to throw us in the paths of other young awesomes. So here’s to 2008: May you greet us as wholeheartedly as we greet you, with a chance to do it better!
