Near the coast of West Africa, in both urban slums and crop-covered countrysides, there beats a quick and steady rhythm. It serves as a continuous tribute to Fela Kuti, the father of the jazz/funk/traditional chant hybrid music called Afrobeat. But nowhere is Fela’s spirit more properly honored than in the energy of San Francisco’s Aphrodesia, who recorded this album-length blend of Afrobeat, Ghanaian highlife, and Afro-Cuban music after traveling to Nigeria and Ghana. Like Fela’s best work, the beat never stops as the songs groove into each other, making it the perfect soundtrack for long drives or late night dances. It will solidify Aphrodesia as a truly international band, and keep them touring for years to come.
