For its successful community outreach program UCSB Reads for Earth Day – a 2007 campaign to read and discuss the book Field Notes from a Catastrophe and other global environmental issues – the UC Santa Barbara Library received the John Cotton Dana Award from the American Library Association (ALA).

Sponsored by the H.W. Wilson Company, the H.W. Wilson Foundation and the Library and Management Association, the esteemed award includes $5,000 and honored to five libraries, though UCSB stood as the only university recipient. The Library had previously won the silver award for community/governmental relations from the Council for the Advancements and support of Education.
