Richard Leakey

If you’ve ever wanted to hear a controversial and world-renowned paleontologist, wildlife conservationist, Kenyan political figure, and climate-change expert share his words of wisdom on the state of the world, here is your chance. The famed Richard Leaky will be giving a presentation Friday, October 10, at the Lobero Theatre.

His talk, titled “The Sixth Extinction and the New Evolution,” is based upon decades of experience in the conservation field and important conclusions reached at the Stony Brook Environmental Forum convened by Leaky in 2005. He will share what more than 100 of the world’s leading scientists and government officials concluded regarding the severity of the climate crisis and how to work together toward global solutions. Leaky will also cover a wide range of issues resulting from climate change such as the ever-widening rift between rich and poor, spread of AIDS, increasing extinction rates, and need for sustainable development.

As a visual treat, David Anderson, wildlife author, photographer, and veteran advocate of sustainable African eco-tourism, will precede Leaky with a photographic safari through Africa’s timeless natural wonders. Leaky believes that the power to resolve the climate crisis lies in the hands of every person willing to be informed and take action. So come listen to the man whom Time Magazine named one of the most influential people in the last 100 years of human history, and learn how to make an impact.

Richard Leaky’s presentation is from 7 to 8:30 p.m. with a reception afterward from 9 to 10:30 p.m. for those interested in meeting Leaky and further discussing climate and extinction issues to co-create solutions. Admission is $45 general, $25 students/seniors; $100 for both the presentation and reception. Tickets can be purchased at the Lobero Box Office, 963-0761, or online for an additional $3 at
