SBIFF ’09: 10-10-10 Winners Announced
Student Filmmaking Shorts Judged, Winners Screened on Closing Night
The winning screenwriters and directors of the 10-10-10 student film competition were announced following the screening of the films on Sunday, February 1, at the Lobero Theatre. The winning films were shown to the closing celebration audience at the Arlington Theatre, prior to the premiere of Lightbulb.
Both of the high school winners are San Marcos High School students: Stephen Amspoker for his script “The Traveling Legend,” and Aya Miyazaki for her film Beauty in the Breakdown. The college winners were SBCC student Tracey Fisher for her script “Running Late,” and UCSB’s Ryan Turner for directing The Naked Guy.
The 10 filmmakers were paired up with the 10 screenwriters at random, and given 10 days to create 10-minute short films. The fest’s director Roger Durling said the process is meant to give the students an experience that mirrors that of the professional filmmaking industry.
The scripts were written over the course of a month by the student screenwriters, with the help of industry professionals who volunteered as mentors. They were given the theme of “Legend,” which Durling said was meant just as a point of inspiration. The winning films will be showcased in the fall at LuckyBrand.com to coincide with sponsor Lucky Brand Jeans’ new premium denim line, “Legend Jeans.”
