Organics in a Box at UCSB

In a time when the word “shareholders” seems mostly associated with the recently saddened, during a sunny lunchtime outside Mosher Alumni House, a host of people were smiling and eager to be called just that. Katie Maynard, campus sustainability coordinator, and Daniel Laub, a staff member from Housing and Residential Services, have cofounded the Community-Supported Agriculture (CSA) program at UCSB. Faculty, students, and staff can sign up to get a weekly box of fresh organic produce from John Givens Farm in Goleta. “It’s about brining together the community and farmers,” Maynard said. “For this season, we’re in this together. It takes some of the risk away for farmers and it’s a great way to learn what’s going on.” There are two box sizes aimed at different family sizes, but even the smaller box offers nine different items each week-from burstingly fresh strawberries to crisp lettuce. The box even comes with an informational flyer suggesting recipes. For information about the program, email universitycsa@gmail.com.
