The arraignment for – the 50-year-old accused of shooting his brother Daniel Lyons and sister-in-law Barbara Scharton at the couple’s Aurora Avenue home on 5/3-was continued to 6/1 at the request of both the defense and prosecution. The brothers were tangled in a lawsuit over the construction of the couple’s home, which Corey Lyons built for the two Fresno attorneys. The couple was trying to recoup $350,000 from Corey Lyons.

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department announced that, effective 5/18, the fine for seatbelt violations will increase from just under $100 to $142 for each unsecured adult. Part of its “Click It or Ticket” campaign, the rate increase includes a $446 fine for the first offense of having an unsecured child under 16 in the car.

The California Highway Patrol announced that the upcoming Memorial Day weekend is a Maximum Enforcement Period. From 6 p.m. on 5/22 to midnight on 5/25, all available CHP officers will be patrolling the roadways in an effort to increase holiday travel safety and catch scofflaws.
