With global sugar consumption for kids on the rise and the candy-overload holiday right around the corner, the scariest ghoul this Halloween may lurk right inside your child’s goodie bag. This Halloween, instead of handing out toothbrushes (a standard bummer for trick-or-treaters), one local dentist is taking a stand. Dr. Steven Johnson of Johnson Family Dental Offices is upping the ante to the detriment of cavities and the benefit of piggy banks, calling for kids to ditch their candy for cash this Halloween.

Massive amounts of sugar have negative effects on your children’s health, especially their smiles. It can lead to cavities and broken braces. So, by paying $2 a pound for up to five pounds of candy, Johnson is encouraging kids to enjoy Halloween without experiencing unhealthy drawbacks: After Halloween festivities have ended, trick-or-treaters can turn in their unopened Halloween candy to all Johnson Family Dentist offices from November 2 through November 5, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., for cash, with a $30 maximum limit per family. Additionally, at each Johnson Family Dentist office, there will be a drawing for an IPod 8GB Nano.

“Visiting your dentist twice a year and brushing daily are great preventative measures, but doing away with excess sweets altogether would really give your teeth a healthy boost,” Dr. Johnson stated in a press release.

Kids can walk away richer and happier knowing that they didn’t just benefit themselves, but also our troops overseas, who will be receiving all of the candy collected by Dr. Johnson’s anti-cavity movement.
