Santa Barbara Celebrates the Shortest Day of the Year
From singing to candle-lighting, from drumming to philanthropy, Santa Barbarans will find no shortage of ways to commemorate the shortest day of 2009. The following is a roundup of some of the best ways to celebrate Winter Solstice this year:
• Julefest Winter Solstice Party: A singing celebration with the Lamplighters a capella choir on Friday, December 18, at 6 p.m., at Solvang Park (486 1st St., Solvang). Free. Call 688-6144.
• Seasonal Celebration: Honor the coming of Solstice and other traditional holiday observances with the Institute of World Culture on Saturday, December 19, at 7:30 p.m., at the Concord House (1407 Chapala St.). Call 966-3941.
• 3rd Annual Panzumo Winter Solstice Celebration: Live performances by Panzumo Entertainment’s drum and dance ensemble, with proceeds benefiting the group’s educational outreach programs at area high schools, on Saturday, December 19, from 7:30-10:30 p.m., at the S.B. Dance Center (127-A W. Canon Perdido St.). $10-$20. Call 966-4604.
