Do you love your beau, but hate the pre-canned schmaltz of a Hallmark Valentine’s? Are you single and looking for a fun-filled way to enjoy V-Day with the ladies? If so, then this Thursday, the Presidio Motel is the only place you need to be. Starting at 6 p.m., the State Street lodging house plays host to Open Hearts, a one-night-only pop-up shop that promises handmade and personalized Valentine’s gifts and goodies from some of S.B.’s most creative minds.

Concocted by Presidio co-proprietor (and recent newlywed) Kenny Osehan, the event is most definitely designed with love in mind. “It’s kind of a collaborative between myself and my girlfriends,” she explained. “So many of my friends are always making these beautiful things, and there’s so much love involved in what they make that we thought it would be the perfect pre-Valentine’s event.” Up for grabs at the shop are handmade shirts by Paris Miller; purses, wallets, and jewelry from the likes of Leia Everett, Camilla Bourbon, and Rachel Herbst; and an assortment of handmade Valentine’s cards, poems, and collages by S.B. artists Kyra Lehman, Eric Lehman, and Laura Devendorf; photog Nancy Neil’s lover’s photo booth; and personalized playlists (i.e. this generation’s mixed tape).

Like the Presidio’s über-popular annual craft fair, Jill of All Trades, Open Hearts promises a laidback atmosphere that’s half-shopping, half-party, though on a much smaller scale than the mid-summer blowout. This time around, eight to 10 artists will be peddling wares from within the motel’s manager’s unit (to stave off the winter chill), and treats and drinks (think truffles, belinis, beers, banana splits, and gluten-free cookies) will be for sale. As for how to get your guy friends to come along, Osehan laughed, “I don’t know. Maybe there will be some hot single ladies? Everyone will definitely be in the mood for love.”

Open Hearts kicks off at the Presidio Motel (1620 State St.) this Thursday, February 4, at 6 p.m. and runs ’til 11 p.m. Call 963-1355 for info; 10 percent of the proceeds will be donated to relief efforts in Haiti.
