A Carpinteria man was killed on 6/5 in an hang-gliding accident above the foothills of San Bernardino County. Thomas Mayer, 60, was taking part in a hang-gliding aerobatics competition when his glider malfunctioned and his emergency parachute failed to deploy. He fell 300 feet to the ground and was rushed to Community Hospital of San Bernardino, where he succumbed to his injuries. Not long afterward, another hang glider crashed, but the pilot was able to deploy his chute. He was taken to a nearby hospital with broken ribs. It is not clear if the incidents were related.
