I’d like to know who the driver that crashed into the house and killed the family was working for. A couple of years ago an overworked, underpaid driver killed a young woman cyclist up near Sheffield Reservoir. Pedro Nava was quick to get a bill passed making it a crime to pass too closely to a cyclist but nobody (that I know of) reported on the fact that a large construction company had trucks driven by independent contractors going up and down the hill all day long, paid by the load rather than the hour. I’m wondering if this driver, who seems to have survived a large number of citations for safety violations over recent years, is a de facto employee of some big firm that ought to be held somewhat liable for his behavior. You could probably do a pretty good story on the issue of “independent contractors” in the local construction industry and the toll that trend is taking on salaries as well as safety.
