City Approves New Spay/Neuter Ordinance

The City Council voted unanimously on 10/5 to adopt a new spay/neuter ordinance which requires that all pet owners obtain a vet certificate before getting a license for their unaltered cat or dog. The new guidelines align more fully with the county’s ordinance, which goes into effect at the beginning of this year and makes it mandatory for pet owners within unincorporated county areas to fix their cats or dogs unless they have a vet certificate. According to officials, the city contributes about 44 percent of unwanted pets in county shelters and the new rules are meant to cut down on pet overpopulation.
