TOP SPORTING EVENTS: FEBRUARY 10-21
Fresh off their first regular-season men’s volleyball victory at Pauley Pavilion since 2002, the UCSB’s Gauchos will try to make it a season sweep over UCLA on their home floor Friday night. The Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match starts at 7 p.m. at Rob Gym.
The Gauchos (7-5 overall, 5-4 MPSF) defeated the Bruins (7-6, 2-5) in four games Wednesday night. The scores were 25-11, 25-23, 18-25, 27-25. Senior outside hitter Jeff Menzel led the UCSB attack with 17 kills. As a team, the Gauchos hit for a .409 percentage.
UCLA’s 19-time NCAA champions have dominated UCSB over the years – winning 116 of 147 matches – but the Gauchos defeated the Bruins in the Collegiate Invitational last month and will be going for a three-match winning streak Friday.
Tonight (Thur., Feb. 10) at the Thunderdome, the Gaucho women’s basketball team will try to loosen up a logjam in the Big West standings when it takes the floor against UC Irvine. Behind front-running Cal Poly (9-1), UCSB (6-4) is fighting for second place with UC Davis (7-4), UC Riverside (6-3) and Irvine (5-5). Riverside, which posted a startling 81-48 victory over the Gauchos last month, will visit the Thunderdome on Saturday afternoon.
The Big West men’s race is similarly tight, as UCSB (5-5) is tied for fourth with Pacific, a game out of second place (Cal Poly and Cal State Northridge at 6-4). The Gauchos will try to gain ground at Irvine and Riverside.
Both Westmont College and SBCC will be playing at home in Saturday night basketball double-headers.
