On October 3, the Santa Barbara Symphony announced the consolidation of the Santa Barbara Youth Symphony’s education programs under its new administrative umbrella. With the announcement came the appointment of Amy Bassett, who previously worked with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, as the symphony’s director of education and outreach.

The decision was reached during the S.B. Symphony’s creation of a five-year strategic plan for the Youth Symphony’s education goals. While the Youth Symphony had functioned as its own formal organization since 1974, the Santa Barbara Symphony’s directors decided its educational programs would achieve greater synergy under new direction. The new plan will allow the directors to refine individual initiatives by speaking to teachers, parents, and community leaders while also providing its 200-plus students with in-depth assessments as they move through the symphony’s various programs.

“It is the hope that this new unification will bring together each one of the Santa Barbara Symphony Orchestra Associations programs into an educational suite that can be offered to the community,” said Bassett. “By having an in-depth assessment, we will be able to adapt and modify individual elements to more effectively serve the community.”
