Best of 2011: Media
S.B. Columnist
Starshine Roshell
Our own chronicler of the complicated joys of family life and contemporary mores was delirious to learn of her reader-voted apotheosis: “Shoot, I know I’m supposed to say something droll and spontaneous — do I have time to call Nick Welsh? I’m a little embarrassed by my inability to resist writing about sex strikes, circumcision, and plus-size models, so it’s a relief to know Indy readers are freaky-fascinated with uncouth topics, too. And I love the wild arguments that spark and sizzle in the comments sections below each column online — Santa Barbarans are wicked smart … or, alternately, snarky smart-mouths.”

S.B. Radio Station
92.9FM KjEE
It’s hard to imagine the ideal voter in our annual Best Of issue when you consider how authoritatively they weigh in on retirement communities at the same time giving the nod to the station that supports the Slightly Stoopid show and still employs the Cool Ruler while seeking advice from the Sex Doctor late at night. Since the mid-1990s KJEE has played music from a tightly controlled list meant to intelligently bang heads. The demographic is clearly teenage, apparently, though, the city is so small some of the indie-metallish-alternative music has leaked out. What are we trying to say? They’ve been the readers’ pick for the last five years, and we think a few of the voters might be grownups.

S.B.-Based Web Site
Edhat.com
Thus spake the Hat Man: “Thanks! Ed, the dog, and the dedicated staff are honored to have been selected best S.B.-based Web site for the fifth year straight. In the past year we’ve welcomed many more locals to our site for citizen news from their neighbors, photos from all around town, hot topic conversation on the comments board, and much more. We invite folks to check us out at edhat.com, which we consider not just a Web site, but an online community for all of greater Santa Barbara to share.”
