SBCC Principals’ Breakfast

Since 1999, SBCC faculty and staff have worked with local high schools to offer college classes at high school sites and enrollment opportunities for high school student interested in taking SBCC classes at the main campus or online. Currently 1,664 high school students in 106 class sections are enrolled in SBCC fall courses at the high school campuses. .In addition, Dual Enrollment also oversees SBCC’s involvement with the Middle College and High School Academies/Career Technical Education Programs.

At the breakfast meeting, the college and high school representatives engaged in a two-way dialogue: SBCC and high school administrators and staff gave updates on current grants and other new initiatives with which they are engaged to increase student learning and goal attainment, which includes participation in the Dual Enrollment program. The discussions focused on how the programs are complementary and how to build on expanding the partnerships in order to increase the number of high schools graduates who successfully transition to SBCC to complete their studies or transfer to a four-year college or university.

The Dual Enrollment Program shared the SBCC Progression of Education Model (PEM) which creates pathways for students, as early as the summer before 9th grade, to research career choices and prepare for college. This program is designed to enable students to complete as much as a year of college general education requirements by the time they graduate from high school. As part of the PEM, students in 9th grade participate in a three-unit dual enrollment life planning course, and exit the course with a portable, online 10-year plan which will be updated in 10th, 11th and 12th grades.
