School Board Implements Transitional Kindergarten Program

Thu Dec 15, 2011 | 12:00am

In order to comply with state law, the Santa Barbara School Board — which installed Susan Deacon as its new president with Monique Limón as vice — voted unanimously Tuesday night to implement a Transitional Kindergarten program available to students whose birthdays fall between September 1 and the state’s December 2 cutoff date. The parents of these children who would be the youngest in their class often decide to wait a year before enrolling them in school. Transitional Kindergarten, beginning in fall 2012, will give those children an extra year to catch up while focusing on socialization rather than academic skills.
