Douglas Preserve Replacement Tree Removed

A Hinoki false cypress tree planted on a bluff at the Douglas Family Preserve to replace the iconic 70-year-old Monterey cypress that fell during strong winds last month has been removed because, explained city officials, “it is not native to California and not in compliance with the Douglas Family Preserve Management Plan and the city’s municipal code.” The city will plant a new native cypress this fall and, also in accordance with the management plan, leave the fallen tree in place. The Parks and Recreation Department will ask for the public’s help to protect the young tree and water it since there’s no irrigation in the preserve.
