This Saturday, the world’s safest beach will become also be the hoppiest as 35 brewers from around the country—and two from abroad—will descend on Carpinteria for the first annual Deep Magazine Surf ‘N’ Suds beer festival. The event was the brainchild of Deep’s director Andres Nuño, and its publisher Mike Van Stry. They were hosting a thank you party last year for advertisers—six of whom were breweries that donated beer—when they had their eureka moment. Surfing and beer are a classic combination, so long as the beer is consumed after the wave-riding.

Along with 90 varieties of golden brown liquid deliciousness, the festival will feature area surfboard shapers showing off their goods. Surfboards and beers, pointed out Nuño, are both craft products. “When you go buy a surfboard,” said Nuño, “you usually don’t get to talk to the shaper. So [at the festival] you’ll have a chance to talk to them about their process. It’s the same thing with beers. You get to meet the people behind them.”

All the Santa Barbara County microbrews—Island, Telegraph, Figueroa Mountain, Firestone—will be represented along with brewers from San Diego to the Bay Area. Out of state representatives include Leinenkugel’s from Wisconsin, Goose Island from Chicago, Mountain Goat from Australia, and Bruton from Italy. Many participants will be visiting the South Coast for the first time, said Nuño, a beer festival aficionado who tried to incorporate elements of his favorite fests into the Surf ‘N’ Suds event.

Live music will be provided by Carpinteria bands The Kicks, The Rincons, and Afishnsea the Moon. The Burger Bus, B&D’s Curbside Grill, and Tiki Taco will be on hand to soak up some of the suds. And most importantly, said Nuño, “We’ve got a lot of restrooms.”

The Surf ‘N’Suds Beer Festival is on Saturday, August 10 on Linden Field at Carpinteria State Park. It goes from 12:30 to 5:30, but VIP tickets will get you in an hour early. There’s no reason to drink and drive, especially with an Amtrak Station right by the park, special rates for transportation to and from Santa Barbara provided by Lowrider Taxi, and free bicycle valet courtesy of The Santa Barbara Bicycle Coalition.
