August’s program takes a peek at a few of the ways human resource management is in fact inescapably a matter of story management – with and between individuals, the organization, and the world at large.

The notions of ‘narrative’ and ‘story’ are getting whole new and massively wide attention as the world we live in transforms daily and challenges us to redefine our story about who we are, how the world is changing, and what to make of that as individuals, organizations, communities, and nations. And since everything we individually or collectively ever think, say, feel, or do is always a use and manifestation of story, all HRM is by necessity an occurrence of story modification, manufacture, and/or story maintenance – often with diverse-to-contentious characters, scenarios, and organizational contexts or levels. This includes dealing with the real objective story on the ground and myriad personal perspectives or story on it.

This presentation provides a glimpse at how understanding story as a living process and all living process as unfolding story: 1) transforms the ability of HRM professionals to do their job well; 2) provides essential tools for them to empower everyone else to do the same; and 3) shows the way to proactively understanding and guiding change and transformation with clarity, intention, and unprecedented success.

Guest Presenter:

Patrick A. Horton, PhD / aka The Story Coach

Patrick A. Horton is an active writer, producer, creative consultant, and social / media advocate best known in the media industry and beyond for well over a decade as the story coach (www.thestorycoach.com).

As an applied anthropologist (with an extremely eclectic history in both the media industry and in real world personal, organizational, and community development), his groundbreaking and increasingly timely blending of story, media, and entrepreneurial strategies for story and project development opens up whole new possibilities and standards in and across multiple arenas.

Dr. Horton is currently developing multiple narrative media projects as founder and principal of the story coach / wind & thunder productions and facilitating cutting-edge documentary and demonstration projects based in Santa Barbara to be shared with the world via the Telling Stories Social & Media Advocacy Project. He is the author of the soon to be released book, Mastering The Power Of Story and is an accomplished leader in navigating and proactively guiding personal, professional, and widely diverse social change.

Of particular relevance for today’s talk, he also has an extensive history with local to national employee assistance programming and with innovatively developing, running, or consulting for entire academic, clinical, corporate, and criminal justice programs from concept to final product or service delivery.

Whether speaking to clients, conferences, organizations or guilds, the collaborative goal is never to simply improve on what is but to discover and then realize what is possible.
