County and Goleta Declare State of Emergency After Refugio Oil Spill

Thu May 21, 2015 | 02:00pm

Santa Barbara County and the City of Goleta declared a state of emergency due to the oil spill just north of Refugio State Beach that resulted in up to 105,000 gallons crude oil leaked. Goleta spokesperson Valerie Kushnerov said they were informed that oil could reach the beaches by this afternoon; this action would allow them to mobilize additional resources if necessary.

The county proclamation allows the county’s emergency services department to request any necessary personnel from other departments. About 300 responders and up to 18 boats from a number of federal, state, and area agencies are operating under Unified Command, working out of the county’s Emergency Operations Center.
