For 20 years Exxon and Venoco have been fracking offshore at the oil rigs we all see from town. But no one knew they were fracking and had been given 51 federal permits to do so, with no environmental considerations. Only because of their persistence did the Environmental Defense Council (EDC) get this information through the Freedom of Information Act.
They filed a lawsuit which was settled by the federal agencies involved, pending approval of a federal judge. After this occurs, the public must be notified for any future offshore applications for fracking and acidification.
