As any new parent can tell you, a good night’s sleep can quickly become the thing of dreams. Enter Joanna and Jan Marco von Yurt, the proud parents of three children, founders of Santa Barbara baby brand Swanling, and creators of the Swanling Slumber Sleeper, an innovative sleep aid helping little ones — and their families — get some much-needed shut-eye.

“Sleep is crucial to a child’s brain and overall physical development, and when children establish successful sleeping habits, they thrive,” says Joanna, who started searching for a better sleep solution with her husband after the birth of their first daughter. Along the way, the couple had two more children and started the baby-accessory brand Swanling, which led to the birth of the Slumber Sleeper.

The Slumber Sleeper’s sleep-sack design works by applying a light sense of pressure on children that mimics the sensation of being in a womb. Infants naturally desire closeness and attachment, and Joanna says that babies using the Slumber Sleeper “feel a similar sensation much like co-sleeping. This reassures them when they wake up in the night and encourages them to cry less and sleep longer.” By using the Slumber Sleeper, children feel a sense of security that is typically only achieved through parent-child contact.

The von Yurts recognize that all children sleep differently. The Slumber Sleeper, however, adapts to the child so that newborns to 3-year-olds can sleep soundly. They have even developed a clinical version of the sleeper for hospital use that has successfully soothed neonatal abstinence syndrome babies experiencing drug withdrawals.

“Sleep tends to be one of the most pivotal things that can make or break family life,” claims Joanna, “and 90 percent of the time, children experience sleep issues because, out of desperation, parents have created a sleep crutch of one kind or another in order to settle their children.” The Slumber Sleeper easily weans children off of sleep crutches and instead provides them with a safe environment where they feel protected.

“Sleep is the number one gift that parents can give their child,” says Joanna. And when children sleep through the night, parents can, too.
