Firefighters beat back a carport fire Monday afternoon at a downtown apartment complex.

A car burned Monday afternoon inside a carport at apartments on the 1100 block of Laguna Street, said city fire spokesperson Capt. Gary Pitney in a statement. At approximately 1:22 p.m., firefighters received reports of the structural fire. They arrived to find a vehicle inside a carport engulfed in flames.

Firefighters from Engine 3 used a 275-foot hose line to combat the fire, which was “located to the rear of the deep residential lot,” said Pitney in City Fire’s release. City police helped Engine 1 firefighters evacuate nearby apartments, while Truck Company 1 and Engine 2 firefighters assured the fire didn’t extend into the carport’s ceiling and walls. In addition to the burnt car, several apartment storage lockers were damaged.

Pitney called the blaze “fairly routine,” “with only property damage and no injuries to residents or firefighters.” The fire’s cause is being investigated.
