Since 2006, the Santa Barbara International Film Festival (SBIFF) has bestowed a special award to those whose careers in the movie industry have been stellar. This year, Warren Beatty will be the recipient of the Kirk Douglas Award for Excellence in Film.

Beatty is a multifaceted talent having been nominated for 15 Academy Awards — four for Best Actor, four for Best Picture, two for Best Director, three for Original Screenplay, and one for Adapted Screenplay — and winning an Oscar for Best Director for the epic war drama Reds.

Although he began his career on TV, Beatty became known for his film work that includes starring roles in Splendor in the Grass, Bonnie and Clyde, Shampoo, Reds, Heaven Can Wait, and Dick Tracy. His latest project, Rules Don’t Apply, is slated for release in November, and is a romantic dramedy written, produced, and directed by Beatty.

The SBIFF will present Beatty with the award Thursday, December 1, at Bacara Resort & Spa. All the funds raised from the event support the festival’s free year-round educational programs.

The 2017 SBIFF runs Wednesday, February 1-Saturday, February 11. For more information, see sbiff.org.
