On a brief pause from tour with the Jack Johnson band, famed pianist Zach Gill made a quick stop to perform for Pianos on State Street on October 16, an interactive annual event celebrating artists and music all across Santa Barbara. Covering the length of State Street, the pianos are hand painted by local artists and displayed for anyone to use.

Gill is an American singer/songwriter and UC Santa Barbara alumni. He is well renowned for his jam-pop rock band the Animal Liberation Orchestra (ALO) and also being a long-time member of Jack Johnson’s band.

Ian Chung, intern with the Santa Barbara Independent, got to spend the day with Gill, capturing his performance on State and filming behind the scenes stories of Gill’s roots in Santa Barbara, making the superstar who he is today.
