We were disappointed to read Brook’s Firestone’s attempt to confuse voters about our TV ad, and now we must set the record straight.
The facts about Abel Maldonado’s long history of neglecting his taxes are crystal clear. Since 1995, federal, state and local tax collectors have resorted to imposing nine (9) separate liens against Mr. Maldonado for failing to pay $250,840.42 in taxes.
Then in 2009, Mr. Maldonado made a deal with Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger: in exchange for his deciding vote for the largest tax increase in California history, he would receive a ballot measure for an open primary. Shortly thereafter, Schwarzenegger appointed him as Lieutenant Governor. If Mr. Firestone has any questions about this exchange, he should check with Republican anti-tax crusader Grover Norquist, who gave Mr. Maldonado the first “Richard Rich Back-Stabber Award.”
While he was raising taxes on Californians, Mr. Maldonado was caught in an IRS audit owing $4.2 million in back taxes. In his 2006-08 tax returns, Mr. Maldonado asked taxpayers to subsidize, through improper deductions, his golf clubs and country club membership, private plane, bathroom tile installation, closet remodeling, new outdoor patio and luxury vacation villas in Palm Springs and Shell Beach, among other dubious write-offs. We encourage Mr. Firestone to read the federal tax court documents for himself at http://www.cappsforcongress.com/maldonadotaxdispute
Despite these records, Mr. Maldonado still won’t tell the truth about his taxes. First, he doesn’t mention that he got caught in an IRS audit. Second, he claims he cannot pay his taxes because he has never received a bill, which isn’t true, because the IRS has detailed every improper deduction and has found he owes over $4.2 million in back taxes. He hasn’t paid the bill and that’s why he’s in federal tax court in San Francisco. Third, Mr. Maldonado once promised to post his tax returns on his website as Congresswoman Capps has done, but now he refuses to do so. We wonder why?
The bottom line is Mr. Maldonado embraces a selfish double standard: tax increases for everyone else, and tax avoidance for himself. If Central Coast voters cannot trust Mr. Maldonado to pay his taxes, how can they trust him in Congress? And now he’s asking to be elected to an office where he can have oversight over the IRS, a clear conflict of interest given his ongoing federal tax court case.
In contrast, Lois Capps’ integrity is beyond reproach. When she discovered, on her own, her accountant made an error in her own taxes, she cleared it up right away. Those amended tax returns are posted on her website for everybody to see. While Maldonado breaks his promise to disclose his tax returns, it’s only because Congresswoman Capps’ amended returns are posted on her website that Mr. Firestone can criticize her accountant’s error.
We should also remind Mr. Firestone that Congresswoman Capps has now been targeted by nine (9) misleading attack ads and web videos from Mr. Maldonado and his allies, including Karl Rove’s Super PAC. Where was Mr. Firestone when Mr. Maldonado and Mr. Rove attacked Congresswoman Capps with the same canard about Medicare that Romney / Ryan use against President Obama? The Republican ad currently running against Congresswoman Capps has been repeatedly debunked by independent fact check organizations.
Finally, Mr. Maldonado hasn’t had a press conference in over 5 months and has cancelled 10 appearances with community groups. He seems content to hide behind false Super PAC ads and avoid questions from reporters and voters.
We’re not going to take this anymore – we must respond with the truth and challenge Mr. Maldonado’s credibility.
And Mr. Firestone, if you can find him, please ask Mr. Maldonado if he realizes that his unpaid $4.2 million in back taxes could fund over 760 Pell Grants to help Central Coast students afford college.

Wow politicians that lie, cheat and steal and then lie about it?
It really makes you wonder how these pompous a-holes look in the mirror each day and know they have children, but then again evil is something we are all getting to know up close.

What a pathetic campaign pump.
Maldonado's taxes are still in dispute with the IRS. Of course Capps and Co. is declaring him guilty prior to any due process.
Capps taxes are not in dispute. And it's clear that this multi-year "error" was not just a simple oversight. Do you think her campaign didn't review the taxes prior to releasing them? Lois Capps didn't catch it, her campaign told her to fix it before releasing her taxes, otherwise she never would have paid them unless she was busted by the IRS.

Ask which candidates support and opposes Prop. 30 and you'll understand which candidates REALLY want to raise your taxes.
Now who is trying to mislead voters.

That's funny that Capps blamed her accountant for the error. (in her favor of course)
Kind of like when Tim Geithner blamed Turbo-Tax for the "error" on his taxes.

Mollie presents a comically flawed defense of Capps based on an ad hominum attack on Maldonado. Half of her attack had nothing to do with taxes.
While I cannot vote for Maldonado, if this lady is in charges of the Capps campaign we are all in trouble. And poor Lois does very little to dissuade the vast perception that she is nice but only marginally capable.

Why do I have to pay my income taxes with only legal deductions and Maldonado does not?
And what specifically about the Maldonado taxes was factually incorrect in the letter here by the Capps campaign staffer? Anything?

Botany, get over it, after NINE liens and since 1995 [!] Maldonado's tax situation is still in dispute?! Just like you and Oblati, he simply doesn't want to pay his legitimate taxes, which of course makes him a Republican.
As John_Adams points out to you, what IS factually incorrect in Molly's letter?? Why not get specific, eh??
Isn't it great that some politicians WILL stand up: how good Lois is FOR PROP 30 and parcel taxes A and B: she cares about the children in our state and their education. Selfsh folks just rant and post and whine about paying taxes, thus they automatically support Maldonado... and he's got plenty, why does he whine so much about $250K? Pay up brother, or lose your election for this amount.

Don' t you know J-Adams? The Maldonados are special, they deserve our fealty and a tax free existence.

See these entitled top 2 % Maldonado conservative/republican types like to complain about the 98% earned benefits, cleverly and divisively misnamed "entitlements." It was all over the republican convention, all about how the chamber of commerce business owner types are victims of the 98% because we want them to pay their graduated taxes because they benefit from what 98% 'we built that' and labored for.

As with most conservatives in my acquaintance, the ones who whine the most about paying taxes are the very same ones who do all they can to avoid paying taxes(including cheating). Can you imagine a guy like Romney , taking advantage of all the perks that American taxpayers pay for , then weaseling out and stashing his dough overseas to avoid paying his fair share? 13% my ass! Send these tax cheats packing.

I've supported Rep. Capps throughout her long history here on the Central Coast. But now, I've had enough. Why has she resulted to this negative campaign? I'm going to be voting for Maldonado this year because he seems to have a plan, and it demonstrates with the campaign he is running. Capps just attacks Maldonado...and we all know she is just going to vote how she's told. I HATE that.

I'm prepared to accept this even though it's by Capps' campaign manager if I can find the organizations she cites, "The Republican ad currently running against Congresswoman Capps has been repeatedly debunked by independent fact check organizations." Where are these reports?
