This July the Santa Barbara Trust for Historic Preservation (SBTHP) continues “Sharing Our Common Ground: Asian American History in Santa Barbara County” with a three-part summer film series focusing on Chinese American and Japanese American communities. All films will begin at 7:00 p.m. in the Alhecama Theatre (914 Santa Barbara Street, Santa Barbara). Reception to follow.

Friday, July 12: Somewhere Between (2011 – 88 min), Alhecama Theatre

This documentary presents the lives of four very different teenage girls who share one thing in common: all were adopted from China. These strong young women allow us to grasp what it is like to come-of-age in today’s America as transracial adoptees. By witnessing their struggle with self identity, we ourselves pause to consider who we are, both as individuals and as a nation of immigrants.

Friday, July 19: I Am Bruce Lee (2012 – 94 min), Alhecama Theatre

I Am Bruce Lee tells the story of one of the most iconic Asian Americans of the 20th century. The enormous impact he has had on entertainment, as well as American and international culture, is explored through interviews with some of the people who knew him best. Featuring rarely seen archival footage, classic photos, and cutting edge visuals and graphics, Bruce Lee is shown not only as an expert martial artist and entertainer, but as a man who challenged stereotypes and helped shape American consciousness. Please note this film contains clips of physical violence.

Friday, July 26: The Cats of Mirikitani (2006 – 74 min), Alhecama Theatre

Eighty-year-old Jimmy Mirikitani survived the trauma of WWII internment camps, the bombing of Hiroshima, and homelessness by creating art. But when 9/11 threatens his life on the New York City streets, filmmaker Linda Hattendorf brings him to her home and the two embark on a journey to confront Mirikitani’s painful past. An intimate exploration of the lingering wounds of war and the healing powers of friendship and art.
