Neil Young Plays Long at the Bowl, Faces Possible Fines
Rebel Rockers Break the Venue’s Noise Curfew
Neil Young + Promise of the Real played loud and long at the Santa Barbara Bowl on Saturday night, so long that their set broke the Bowl’s hard curfew of 10 p.m. nightly. According to Executive Director of the Santa Barbara Bowl Rick Boller, Young and the band played until about 10:39 p.m. on Saturday.
Boller told The Santa Barbara Independent that sound curfew violations are “pretty rare” at the Bowl, where shows start early and artists typically play only a couple minutes past 10 in order to finish a song. Boller also said there are fines associated with playing long at the venue, which has to pay vendors and service staff more to work overtime. “When things get extended by an hour, you have hundreds affected and thousands of dollars spent,” he explained.
The Bowl is still working through the incident with the concert’s organizers in order to determine whether Young and Promise of the Real will face fines and what those fines would be. However, the door has not closed for Neil Young at the Santa Barbara Bowl, where many, including Boller, hope to see him again. As Boller said, “Neil’s an influential artist that we’ve worked with before and had positive experiences with.”
