Thanks for all the comments, peeps! JohnLock, you are right, this poll needs a "None of the Above" option. Bicyclists are considered drivers as part of the CA Vehicle Code and therefore have all the same rights and responsibilities as drivers of motor vehicles. We are legally allowed to ride on the road, in or out of bike lanes, and on bike paths--depending on our destination, road conditions and speed. As for sidewalks, the CA law leaves it up to local jurisdictions to decide if it's legal for bicyclists to ride on the sidewalks, and most jurisdictions (including almost everywhere in Santa Barbara County) choose to make sidewalk riding ILLEGAL. Bicyclists have the right to leave the right-most part of the road way for a number or reasons; to avoid conflicts such as car doors or right-turning vehicles, to pass slower moving vehicles, or to prepare for a turn or go straight.

Thanks everyone for your support and concern (this is Erika Lindemann). I'm pleased to report that we found Angelina today at the Animal Shelter way out in Goleta (she'd been transported there by trailer). When she saw us she let out a long bray as if she knew right away who we were. She seems to be in fine shape. She apparently was found grazing the green grass at the Santa Barbara Tennis Club, at the base of Foothill Rd and Mission Canyon, about 2 miles down the road from our house in Mission Canyon. She knew where to go!
