Instead of taking beloved churches, schools and convents away from religious and laity to pay off scandal related debts, why not first deprive those who ignored and perpetuated the sources of scandals of THEIR homes and property? And please don't give me that "Oh, the bishop's home belongs to the people." garbage. Let bishops move into smaller homes or apartments and sell THEIR mansions and large houses. Let them drive modest cars or use public transportation like most people.
Sell off cathedral property (which means less to most Catholics than their own parish churches) and let bishops travel from parish to parish, having no official home, even as the Apostles had none. Give glory to God in His churches by all means and make them beautiful, but the days of prince-bishops who have servants and live in palaces are over. The physical, tangent property of the Church exists largely because of the blood, sweat and tears of lay people over the centuries. They should demand that their bishops LIVE like bishops of the Church, in Christ like simplicity.
