Around 37 years ago, I was an 8th grader and dated a girl whose parents had an interest in the Las Varas Ranch. I recall being invited to spend a day, there, one summer, with her and her parents. The beach was pristine; I hope it still is and that it stays that way! I believe the girl is still in this area, but, to my knowledge, her parents are gone and the family no longer has any financial interest in that property. It is just atrip through the "Way Back" machine, for me.

My condolences, to the family, as well! Jeff was a long time acquaintance of mine and, hopefully, there will be some kind of memorial. I cannot even count the number of times I have had conversations with him, over the years (don't know why I would <Big Grin>), but, I can recall many wetsuits and trunks, that came from his shop, on Carrillo Street! Here's hoping that someone, with knowledge, of these things, chimes in with memorial details! Surf that Big Wave, Jeff!

Steve Dunn is an excellent choice, Eastern Pacific, but I don't feel he would run for anything, as he is one of the least outspoken people I know!

Ziggat has it right, Greedy Republicans should be in charge and no other people should exist, except Fascists, with close cropped haircuts, giving Nazi salutes, to each other! The PTB needs to eugenically root out any other human beings, getting the population, on the planet, down to around 500 million, lorded over by 1 million elite shock troops and jackbboted thugs! Keep it up, Ziggat!

The Govinator was quoted today as saying that seeing video of the BP disaster, in the Gulf of Mexico, has led him to change his mind, about offshore drilling, off the California Coast! I think he owns property, in the Carpinteria foothills, as well, which might have had some bearing on his decision to pursue alternatives, to offshore drilling, as he goes into retirement, next year. One thing that puzzles me is, why did it take viewing said video, to get a negative opinion of offshore drilling? There was plenty of foottage, of a documentary sort, from the 1969 spill, available, to foment such an opinion, before now! Has he changed his mind or is there something else up his sleeve, beside his well developed arm?

Once, when I was perusing the news rack, on lower State street, while smoking a cigarette, Randy walked by, by himself and gave me a condemning look. As an ex smoker, now, I know what he meant, but, at the time, I thought he needed to "curb his enthusiasm"! He is really very tall and had an intimidating look about him!

Since there were so many comments on this issue, all I have to say is "Who put the BOP in the BOP de BOP de BOP, Who put the RAM in the RAMA LAMA Ding Dong?"

Does anyone remember the era of politics under the aegis of such people as Don Macgillivray(spelling mine)? This was the era when the Crosstown Freeway was the talk of the circuit and Pearl Chase was a liberal leader. Things have certainly changed; this was probably before Van Swindle was out of diapers!

I cannot believe that no one has seen the obvious surname switch for Van Swinkle -- it's Van Swindle!

For the second time, this year, those of us who live in the Hollister/Turnpike area have had to put up with the ceaseless droning of Police heliocopters, for hours on end! Psychologically, this has an effect on the populace, intended or not! It also begs the question: Could the taxpayers money be better spent, in a time of economic downturn, on some other way of determining the whereabouts of a supposed fugitive? Are we already living in a totalitarian regime? All the statistics I read, in this comments section required a lot of internet searching, on the part of a few people, to support their point of view. It seems to me that they were missing the point, as did Law Enforcement, in their zeal to find one young person. There has to be a better way of dealing with this kind of situation, now doesn't there? I totally support the Law; let's find a better way of enforcing it, before civilization becomes extinct!
