Six Events Flying Under Your Radar

From The Shins show on Saturday at the Bowl and Bela Fleck at Campbell Hall on Tuesday to the Phoenix Piano Quartet at Lotte Lehmann and The Clean House at Ensemble Theatre, fall’s action-packed arts season is in full swing. But before your calendar fills, don’t forget these events that might be flowing below your radar.

1) Bombay Calling: UCSB’s MultiCultural Center Theater will be screening this Canadian documentary about the West’s fondness for outsourcing call centers to India on Wednesday, October 10, 6 p.m.

2) The Ojai Film Festival: Take a brief jaunt out of town to check out this eighth annual Ojai flick extravaganza, a four-day affair from October 4-8 full of docs, features, panels, and all the trappings of a cinematically perfect weekend. See ojaifilmfestival.com.

3) Americans Who Tell the Truth: Robert Shetterly’s traveling portraits of such justice-seeking American icons as Mother Jones, Cesar Chavez, Ralph Ellison, and John Muir come to the Arts Alive! gallery through the end of the year, thanks to sponsorship from UCSB’s Walter Capps Center. Shetterly will be there for the opening on Friday, October 5, 5-7 p.m. See cappscenter.ucsb.edu.

4) Improvability: UCSB’s favorite comedy troupe-whose motto is “Comedy is the hammer we use to crush the enemy”-kicks off the fall 2007 season with its opening show on Friday, October 5, 8 p.m. at Isla Vista’s Embarcadero Hall. It’s only $3.

5) Riches, Rivals, and Radicals: 100 Years of Museums in America: The Wildling Art Museum in Los Olivos keeps its “Free Friday Flick” series alive with this documentary about museums across the country on Friday, October 5, 7 p.m. See wildlingmuseum.org.

6) Luncheon of the Boating Party: Author Susan Vreeland will discuss and sign her latest historical fiction novel, which breathes narrative life into the people featured in Renoir’s famous painting of the same name. On Sunday, October 7, 2 p.m. at the S.B. Museum of Art.
