The best way to ring in the New Year is with a proper goodbye to the old year. For some, that might mean curling up on the couch with a bucket of ice cream and watching a favorite movie; others might want to hit that party where a lampshade on your head is appropriate attire. But for those who aren’t yet sure how to spend the last day of the year, Listings Editor Rachel Weight has put together a list of happenings to choose from that includes champagne dinners, deejayed dance nights, live music, and even a sacred ritual of release and recreation.

However you decide to welcome 2008, keep in mind this sage advice from founding father Benjamin Franklin: “Be always at war with your vices, at peace with your neighbors, and let each New Year find you a better [hu]man.” Happy New Year!

What to Sing

So you don’t have to fake the words this year, here are the lyrics to “Auld Lang Syne,” the traditional New Year’s tune written by Scotsman Robert Burns.

“Auld Lang Syne”

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,

and never brought to mind?

Should auld acquaintance be forgot

and days of auld lang syne?

(chorus)For auld lang syne, my dear,

For auld lang syne,

We’ll take a cup o’ kindness yet

For auld lang syne.

And surely ye’ll be your pint-stoup !

And surely I’ll be mine !

And we’ll take a cup o’ kindness yet,

for auld lang syne.

(chorus)For auld lang syne, my dear,

For auld lang syne,

We’ll take a cup o’ kindness yet

For auld lang syne.

We twa hae run aboot the braes

And pou’d the gowans fine;

We’ve wander’d mony a weary foot

Sin’ auld lang syne.

(chorus)For auld lang syne, my dear,

For auld lang syne,

We’ll take a cup o’ kindness yet

For auld lang syne.

We two hae paidled i’ the burn,

Frae mornin’ sun till dine;

But seas between us braid hae roar’d

Sin’ auld lang syne.

(chorus)For auld lang syne, my dear,

For auld lang syne,

We’ll take a cup o’ kindness yet

For auld lang syne.

And here’s a hand, my trusty friend,

And gie’s a hand o’ thine;

We’ll take a cup o’ kindness yet

For auld lang syne.

(chorus)For auld lang syne, my dear,

For auld lang syne,

We’ll take a cup o’ kindness yet

For auld lang syne.
