KCLU Sweeps Radio Awards Again
Lance Orozco Gets Six Golden Mikes
KCLU, a National Public Radio station broadcasting in Santa Barbara and Ventura, on 1/27 received six Golden Mike awards from the Radio and Television News Association of Southern California. News director and one-time KEYT reporter Lance Orozco won five of those prizes individually for stories ranging from a report on the Zaca fire (Best Spot News) and a series on the 2006 elections (Best News Special) to features about a breast cancer survivor (Best News and Public Affairs Program), Americorps literacy volunteers (Best Individual Writing), and the nonprofit Women’s Economic Ventures (Best Business and Consumer Reporting).
Orozco shared the sixth award, for a piece called Zaca Fire Flare-Up (Best Live News Coverage) with reporter John Palminteri and operations manager Jim Rondeau. This is the seventh year in a row that KCLU has dominated the small market radio category, for stations with news staffs of five or fewer people. Orozco was named Radio Reporter of the Year in 2006 by the Associated Press Television and Radio Association of California and Nevada. Two years earlier, the Los Angeles Press Club dubbed him Journalist of the Year. KCLU, hosted at the California Lutheran University, is on the dial at 102.3 FM in Santa Barbara.
