After 19 years of being imprisoned for a plot to assassinate Queen Elizabeth I, Mary, Queen of Scots, is beheaded. Ouch.

Nelson Mandela, leader of the movement to end South African apartheid, is released after 27 years in prison.

February 14, 1929

Bacteriologist Sir Alexander Fleming “accidentally” discovers penicillin when mold falls into an uncovered plate of staphylococcus bacteria.
