A deliciously entertaining, educational evening was had by all who packed themselves into the Marjorie Luke Theatre on March 5. Delectable, healthy food samplings greeted attendees as they poured through the front doors. A spirited conversation took place on stage with the featured speakers, author Marion Nestle (Food Politics), filmmaker Morgan Spurlock (Super Size Me), and moderator Kate Adamick, consultant for the Orfalea Fund’s s’Cool Food Initiative, which sponsored the event. All three left the audience with plenty of “food for thought” on the future of school lunches.

The serious issues at hand (childhood obesity, declining life expectancies, etc.) were broken up with pointed light-heartedness by Spurlock. When asked how to describe current school cafeterias, he retorted “7-11s with books.” And the image is a stark reminder of how stock mini-mart items such as chips and Gatorade have infiltrated schools under the guise of giving students “nutritional choices.”
